There’s a charming wine store in Pasadena you might not have known about. Because it’s hidden inside an apartment building. And is only open when “the American flag is out.” Sounds almost like a speak-easy of sorts, doesn’t it? Except, fortunately, there’s no password required. You just have to know where to go and when to arrive.
Luckily, I’m here for you.
Chronicle Wine Cellar is located on California and South Lake Ave. Ish. I say “ish” because it’s just east of Lake and actually sits behind a mom-and-pop burger joint, inside an old apartment building.
So, ready? Walk east on California, past the burger place, make a left down the driveway, and head back towards the apartment building. Oh, and if the American flag is flying, that means the store is open. Got it?
Yes, it’s a bit quirky, but I think you’ll find the prices and varieties (and customer service) worth it. Because Chronicle Wine Cellar has got deals. According to its website, “The Chronicle Wine Cellar has established itself as providing the best wine values anywhere.” Wines range from under $6 to $120. French wines, Italian wines, California wines, you name it. The “no-frills atmosphere” allows for the store to offer great wines at amazing prices. Current wine deals include a 2013 Rose from Spain for just $6.95; a 2010 Cabernet, Two Angeles from Sonoma for only $16.95; and a 2013 Chardonnay from France for $7.95.
What I love most about this store is that it’s pretentious-free. The workers enjoy showing you their inventory, no matter how much—or how little—you know about wine. They’re enthusiastic, friendly, and knowledgable. And welcome you into their store like they’d welcome you into their home. Don’t wait to visit Chronicle Wine Cellar!
