Snuggled up against the San Gabriel mountains and north of Pasadena is the cozy community of Altadena.
The 8.7-square-mile area received its name and location after the Woodbury brothers, John and Frederick, bought 937 acres from the Indiana Colony (which founded Pasadena) in 1882. While the community stands alone—and worked hard to separate itself from Pasadena—Altadena remains an unincorporated area of Los Angeles. Its population is diverse; its geography lush; and its feel is homy. Especially since most of the housing units are single-family homes, many of which are backed up against mountain trails.
Plus? Altadena is home to a great library, park, theater, golf course, and view. Altadena Public Library participates in a preschool story time; the park—Loma Alta Park—offers tennis courts and fields; the amphitheater holds summer concerts; the golf course homes two nine hole courses; and the view—atop Echo Mountain—is beautiful.
But Altadena is more than a sleepy and green oasis; its a trendy spot for restaurants and bars as well. AltaEats offers a changing menu of fresh and inventive foods (plus a tasting menu and Sunday roasts). Bulgarini Gelato’s selection of gelato will have you thinking you’re in Italy. And then there’s the family-owned Altadena Ale & Wine House, which serves up beverages like Arrogant Bastard, Delirium Tremens, and Houblon Chouffe among other great stuff. While the Altadena scene is less hipster than most, its neighborhood-vibe draws its customers in and keeps them there, turning visitors into regulars.
