Beautiful landscaped homes, distinguished schools, and a suburban family neighborhood, all within 13 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Hello, Arcadia.
The 11.1 square mile city, bordered by Pasadena, Sierra Madre, El Monte, San Marino, Monrovia, and Temple City, is ranked as one of the richest neighborhoods in Southern California and touted by Bloomberg Businessweek as one of the “Best Places to Raise Your Kids” two years in a row.
It’s no wonder why. Arcadia High School is one of the few California public high schools to receive a GreatSchools Rating of 10 out of 10, while two of its elementary schools are Blue Ribbon Schools. The city is home to the historic and lush Arboretum, the Westfield Santa Anita Mall, and low crime.
Plus? The Santa Anita Park, set against the San Gabriel Mountains, is known as one of the most beautiful thoroughbred racetracks in the world. It hosts prestigious races such as the Santa Anita Derby, Santa Anita Handicap (which Seabiscuit won in 1940), and the Breeders’ Cup.
But there’s more to Arcadia than its distinguished schools and interesting sites. Did you know, the McDonald brothers (who later began McDonald’s) opened their first restaurant along the Monrovia/Arcadia border in 1937? Yep. Its name? The Airdrome. The famous U.S. Route 66 passes through Arcadia’s borders; the movie Seabiscuit was filmed at the Santa Anita race track; and Michael Anthony of the band Van Halen graduated from Arcadia High in 1972.
Whether you’re looking to settle in a cozy community of beautiful homes and highly ranked schools or a city with an interesting history, Arcadia is worth the visit.
