Ever seen that massive boulder off the 134 freeway? Which holds the image of an eagle with its wings outstretched? Welcome to Eagle Rock.
The Northeast Los Angeles neighborhood is located in the San Rafael Hills and houses an ethnically diverse and relatively high-income population. The boulder’s cutout of an eagle is what gives this city its name; however, Eagle Rock came into existence in 1911 after suburbanization of the Eagle Rock Valley took off at rapid pace.
Today, the city is home to Occidental College, numerous historical buildings, two high schools, six private schools, and a public library. Plus? Eagle Rock’s got some adorable boutiques and unique eateries. Like the Eagle Rock Public House (tapas with craft beer in a hipster setting), Found Coffee, Patio Burgers and Beer (tiny spot but amazing burgers), The Taco Spot, Little Beast (romantic setting with to-die-for casual gourmet food), Letters from LA (love every hand-picked piece in this darling boutique), Top Knot, and Gift of Garb.
Homes here are reaching high in price, but with good reason. The city is only 9.2 miles from downtown Los Angeles, is one of Redfin’s “Hottest Neighborhoods of 2014,” and offers big-city accouterments (like the restaurants and boutiques listed above) with a charming, small-town feel. Can we say, best of both worlds?
