Del Mar Station Restaurants

New to Pasadena? Check out the Del Mar metro station on Del Mar and Arroyo Parkway for yummy treats and weekly specials. The stop is one of many along the Gold Line, but it’s one of my favorites because of the restaurants located directly off the platform. Like? La Grande Orange and the Luggage Room.

If you’re looking for classic American cooking with a “modern point of view,” La Grande Orange Cafe is right up your alley. The Americana restaurant serves up fresh ingredients daily for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Some of my favorites include their guacamole and chips (man alive, this stuff is good.); their wood-fired rotisserie chicken (moist and pure yum); and their vegetarian taco platter (full of veggie goodness, including pico de gallo, guac, and kale). Plus? You can’t leave without sampling their creamy gelato or key lime pie.

Weekly specials are spot on. Like their Neighborhood Nights—Monday and Tuesday evenings, buy one entree, get the second one for $6 (dine in only; local zip code necessary). On Thursdays, they serve crispy chicken with fresh veggies; and during Saturday brunch, La Grande Orange serves up endless mimosas for $12.

Or, if you’re craving some good ol’ pizza, the Luggage Room should be your first stop. We’re talking a wood-burning oven, fresh ingredients, and interesting combinations. While the food is amazing, the space is equally unique—it once was the 1934 luggage room of the Del Mar Train Station. Inventive, no? My favorites by far are the chopped salad with salumi (fresh and crisp); their mother earth pizza (with artichokes, roasted peppers, broccolini, tomatos, and onions); and their margherita is simple, classic, and oh so tasty.

No reservations taken here, though. And it does get busy. Especially on Neighborhood Nights, which are Monday and Tuesday evenings for buy one pizza, get the second pie for $6. Plus, every Wednesday night select wine bottles are half off. So be sure to get their early—or be prepared to wait. But trust me. It’s worth it.
