Although I grew up in the Pasadena area, and have dinned at many of its steak houses, I had yet to experience one of the city’s classics—Smitty’s Grill. And boy, should I have visited sooner. Because not only is the food delicious, but the atmosphere is classy and the service spot-on. It’s truly a win-win-win.
Since my husband and I are moving soon, we’re doing as much walking around Pasadena as we can. On the list? Walking to Smitty’s and eating at their bar.
So, finally, after four years of living in Pasadena, we made it. Friday night. We walk in. And it’s packed. The bar is full. Thankfully, there’s one table left (since we hadn’t made reservations), so we nab it. I take in the surroundings and instantly feel relaxed. The dim lighting, white table clothes, and low-hum of conversation set the tone of this steak house. It’s legit. Yes, we were seated in a high traffic area, but our server did all she could to make our experience divine. Attentive, friendly, helpful. Took our order and checked in on us, refiling our wine glasses when they got low. Then our food arrived.
Oh man. YUM. My husband ordered a hanger steak—which lasted about 10 minutes on his plate, it was that good. And I got the braised shot rib. Delicious. Good portions (not too large, not too small); nicely sautéed veggies, and melt-in-your-mouth mashed potatoes. Though we were pretty full, we couldn’t pass up dessert and coffee. Which we were glad we didn’t. Key lime pie and coffee? The perfect ending to a perfect meal.
